halloween candyIt’s no big secret; this time of year makes us all work a bit harder for a healthy mouth. Around Halloween, we are all tempted by jumbo bags of candy, Halloween parties, and trick or treating.

Even though we encourage you to enjoy this holiday, we urge you to take care of your mouth too! The overconsumption of sugary snacks isn’t great for your teeth or gums. Sugar is bacteria’s best friend; when these two get together, acid is created, causing your mouth to become the perfect environment for gum disease and cavities.

Want to keep your teeth “BOO-tiful” this Halloween? Consider these 3 tips so you aren’t haunted by scary oral health problems.

How to Keep Your Mouth Healthy During Halloween

Choose Wisely. When offered up a variety of candies, choose something chocolate based or easily dissolvable. A smart option is always a sugary snack that doesn’t sit in your mouth for too long! Opting for sticky treats or hard candies increases the amount of time your teeth are exposed to sugar, which does more harm than good.

Eat Candy After a Meal. Don’t skip dinner! When you eat, your mouth produces saliva. This liquid keeps you from wearing your meal on your teeth, naturally cleaning your smile and ridding it of undesirable bacteria. The best time to consume a sugary snack is when your mouth is full of this cleaning solution- you will also be less inclined to overindulge if you choose candy on a full stomach!

Eat a Healthy. It is hard to turn down treats on October 31st, but if you know you normally participate in a balanced diet, you won’t feel so bad! Make sure to create variety in your diet by including nutrients from fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid processed starches and liquids like soda, juice, and sweetened tea- all of which contain added sugars.

On behalf of Stetson Hills Dental, we wish you and your family a happy, healthy, safe (and spooky) Halloween!
