What are dental veneers?
Veneers are very thin “shells” that are bonded directly to the surface of teeth. Porcelain veneers can be used for cosmetic purposes but are also used to keep teeth healthy. They are often placed on teeth that are so severely stained or discolored that teeth whitening methods aren’t enough to make teeth look better. They may be used for teeth that:
- Are noticeably short and stubby
- Have minor chips
- Are excessively worn down
- Are malformed
- Are crooked
- Have gaps between them
What is the dental veneer procedure?
To get veneers, you should have good oral health in general and only minor aesthetic problems with your teeth. Dr. Moore will perform a thorough exam of your mouth to make sure it meets these requirements and also to see if veneers are the right solution for your problems.
You must have healthy teeth and gums and a stable bite. Veneers might not be a good choice for you if you have a habit of clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth as this puts a lot of stress on them. If you have extensive tooth decay or an inadequate amount of tooth enamel, Dr. Moore may recommend against veneers.
After Dr. Moore examines your teeth and takes X-rays to make sure they are healthy, he will want to discuss with you what you are hoping to achieve with veneers. If Dr. Moore decides veneers are right for you, he will begin by preparing your tooth for the veneer. He will give you local anesthetic and trim off some enamel from the tooth. The amount of enamel removed is related to the size of the veneer to be placed. Enamel must be removed so that the veneer doesn’t stick out too far or look too large compared to the surrounding teeth.
When the enamel has been trimmed, he will make a model of the tooth, which will be sent to the lab where technicians will make the veneer. After it is ready, you will come back to Stetson Hills Dental for placement. Dr. Moore will place it on your tooth to make sure it looks and fits right. He may need to remove the veneer, trim it, and place it again and repeat this process until the veneer is just right.
As soon as Dr. Moore is satisfied that the veneer looks good, he will clean and polish your tooth, and then roughen the tooth so that it will bond better with the veneer (a process known as “etching”). He will apply a special cement and attach the veneer, and then use a light that makes the cement harden quickly. He will make any final adjustments and remove any excess cement.
Dr. Moore may ask you to make a follow-up appointment in a few weeks so he can check the veneer after you’ve had a chance to wear it for awhile.
What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?
There are many advantages of porcelain veneers: the procedure to get veneers is painless and quick and the results immediate. Another advantage is that porcelain looks very natural. It is stain- and scratch-resistant. It is very strong and can even make teeth stronger and more stable. Gum tissue also tolerates porcelain very well, unlike some other restoration materials.
There is also another advantage of getting a porcelain veneer at Stetson Hills Dental. Dr. Moore is an expert at porcelain veneers and at making sure they are the perfect color and look great!
How do I take care of my dental veneers?
Porcelain veneers typically last anywhere between five and 10 years, but they can last as long as 20 years if they are properly maintained. And that is yet one more advantage of porcelain veneers. They don’t require any special care. Brush twice a day, floss once a day and see Dr. Moore twice a year for regular checkups.
How much do dental veneers cost?
Every patient is different, and the cost of your veneers will vary depending on a few factors. For one thing, if you have severe damage to many teeth, the procedure will cost more.
Stetson Hills Dental takes many different types of insurance, and the staff would be happy to work with your insurance company to see how much, if any, of the porcelain veneer procedure they will pay for. Major credit cards and checks are also accepted, and Stetson Hills Dental also has financing options available.
