Teeth Whitening in Colorado Springs
If you would like your teeth to look whiter and your smile to look younger, Dr. Gary Moore and his staff at Stetson Hills Dental can help!
As we age, it gets harder and harder to maintain white teeth. Smoking, drinking tea and coffee, and other outside factors can make teeth appear dingy and dull. Even if you have managed to stay away from habits and drinks that can stain teeth, over time the enamel on teeth begins to wear away, revealing the dentin underneath. Dentin, unfortunately, is yellow and unattractive.
Can’t I just do teeth whitening at home?
While Dr. Moore may recommend using store bought products at home to maintain the whitening done in his office, the whitening kits you get at the grocery store shouldn’t be the primary way you whiten your teeth.
For one thing, before the whitening procedure, Dr. Moore will thoroughly examine your teeth. It is important to determine why teeth are discolored — discolored teeth can sometimes be the result of a medical problem or some other issue besides just stains. This problem can be caused by a treatment such as chemotherapy, medication such as antihistamines or antibiotics, or even because the patient is getting too much fluoride. A discolored tooth may also be a sign that you have an infection in your tooth.
In-office teeth whitening from Stetson Hills Dental is more effective, and the results last longer than results you get from using over-the-counter, do-it-yourself whitening products.
Another reason you should have your teeth whitening done at Stetson Hills Dental is because they are the dental experts and can adjust the products and procedure to ensure you receive the best possible results for your particular case. Each patient’s needs are different and require customized whitening care.
How will Dr. Moore whiten my teeth?
The first step Dr. Moore will take to whiten your teeth is an examination of your teeth. This is to determine if teeth whitening is the right solution for you. If a patient has very sensitive teeth or severe discoloration, Dr. Moore may recommend another cosmetic procedure, such as veneers.
If you have any cavities in your teeth, they will have to be filled before whitening. This will help to protect the interior of your teeth from the peroxide whitening gel and ensure your smile is as healthy on the inside as it looks on the outside. The Stetson Hills Dental team will also perform a thorough cleaning of your gums and teeth so that they are free of plaque and bacteria.
Then, Dr. Moore will apply the peroxide gel to the teeth. This gel helps to remove stains that are deeply set into the enamel of the teeth. The entire procedure will usually take 45 minutes to an hour. He will apply the gel three times, for 15 minutes each time. If the teeth are extremely stained, more applications may be needed.
When the treatment is over, you will see a dramatic difference in your teeth right away. Patients usually find that teeth are five to eight shades whiter, though individual results will vary.
How long will my teeth whitening last?
With proper maintenance, your teeth can stay their whitest for a couple of years!
You can help your teeth stay white by following a few tips:
- Stay away from foods and liquids that stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, cranberry juice, blueberries, and blackberries.
- Don’t smoke. Tobacco stains get down deep into the grooves and pits in tooth enamel, and are very difficult to remove.
- Stains stick to plaque easily. Make sure you take good care of your teeth, by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day.
- Don’t skip your visits to Dr. Moore for your cleaning and exam. During your cleaning, abrasions and polishing will be used to help get rid of stains.
- Many people don’t know that sports and energy drinks can be bad for teeth. These kinds of drinks can erode tooth enamel and make teeth look discolored, thin, and translucent.
The cost of teeth whitening can depend on a few different things, such as the condition of your teeth and if they are damaged, teeth and gum cleaning, and other factors. Typically the whitening procedure ranges anywhere from $600 to $1,000.
Dr. Moore and the staff at Stetson Hills Dental can discuss cost with you. Most dental insurance policies won’t cover teeth whitening, but we offer cost-saving plans and financial assistance for our patients.
