Dental checkups, cleanings and fillings are necessary for oral health.
Regular dental checkups and cleanings are necessary to ensure the health of your teeth and gums. Without proper oral care, the bacteria in your mouth can build up and wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. Brushing and regular dental cleanings removes cavity- and infection-causing bacteria.
Mouth bacteria thrive on the foods we eat and drink every day. That’s why proper oral maintenance is so vital. The problem comes when the bacteria eat away at our tooth enamel. When this happens, cavities form.
What is a dental checkup?
Regular dental checkups are vital to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy. During a dental checkup, Dr. Moore will take X-rays of your teeth if necessary. He will also check all your teeth and the condition of your gums and other tissues and structures. He will also discuss with you any problems or potential problems that may affect your teeth and gums. He will also need to know your medical history and health/lifestyle habits.
If you have any particular questions or need any advice, Dr. Moore will also go over your concerns with you at that time as well.
What are cavities?
Cavities are holes in our teeth. As mouth bacteria eat away at tooth enamel, they create a hole. If caught early enough a simple filling can repair the tooth. If left to fester, the bacteria can reach the dental pulp in the center of the tooth. This is where the tooth’s nerves are, which can cause pain.
With regular dental care, Dr. Moore can catch any cavities before they become problematic. When caught early enough, cavities are easily cleaned out and the tooth restored with a filling material.
What is a dental filling?
Before a dental filling can be placed, Dr. Moore will remove all the decayed tooth material. This needs to be done because remaining bacteria can still further deteriorate the tooth if not removed. Once the decay is cleaned out, Dr. Moore will be able to see if the root has been affected at all. If you do have an infected tooth pulp, you may need a root canal before the dentist can fill the tooth. If not, Dr. Moore will proceed with placement of the filling and cure it to harden it. There are several filling material options available, depending on your budget, insurance, and needs. The dentist will help you decide which one is right for you.
How do I prevent cavities?
Cavity prevention is actually really easy. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice daily to wash away bacteria and other debris. Flossing at least once a day also helps remove debris that may have become lodged between your teeth and gums. Limiting sugary sweet carbs and treats can also help. Since mouth bacteria thrive on these foods, limiting them also aids in cavity prevention. These are all things that you can do every day at home to prevent cavities.
In addition, regular dental checkups and cleanings help ensure teeth and gums stay healthy.
What is a professional dental cleaning?
Regular professional dental cleanings are usually done once or twice a year, depending on your periodontal disease risk factors. During a professional dental cleaning, a dental hygienist uses special tools to remove plaque, tartar, food and other particles.
These kinds of debris can get caught between your teeth and your teeth and gums. Removal is essential since these things can harbor mouth the bacteria that causes decay. If you have gum disease or a lot of debris between your teeth and gums, your gums may bleed a little during treatment. Also, your teeth and gums may be a little sore for a day or two following treatment. This is only temporary, and the tenderness will go away.
